Los datos que provienen de los historiales universitarios han demostrado claramente que los estudiantes que env\u00edan sus puntuaciones de SAT o ACT anticipan de modo muy preciso cu\u00e1l ser\u00e1 su rendimiento acad\u00e9mico cuando lleguen a la universidad. Mucho m\u00e1s que las cartas de recomendaci\u00f3n de los tutores escolares o incluso que sus credenciales del colegio.<\/p>

En cierto sentido, no sorprende el hecho que los resultados de los ex\u00e1menes sean m\u00e1s predictivos del rendimiento acad\u00e9mico universitario que las calificaciones del colegio, dada la gran variaci\u00f3n en los est\u00e1ndares de calificaci\u00f3n y el rigor acad\u00e9mico entre las instituciones educativas. Adem\u00e1s, la inflaci\u00f3n desmedida de las notas ha disminuido su significado. M.K.:<\/strong><\/span> S\u00ed, hay un par de aspectos acerca de esto. En primer lugar, los investigadores han observado que los puntajes de los ex\u00e1menes son muy predictivos sobre el rendimiento acad\u00e9mico en la universidad para estudiantes de diferentes or\u00edgenes. Y eso contrarresta la idea de que no es \u00fatil para los estudiantes de entornos menos favorecidos o que est\u00e1 sesgado en su contra.<\/p>

El segundo aspecto es de suma importancia ya que los oficiales de las admisiones universitarias no consideran los puntajes de los ex\u00e1menes estandarizados ambiguamente. Son muy abiertos y transparentes sobre el hecho de que los eval\u00faan en contexto. La vara de medida para lo que se considerar\u00eda una puntuaci\u00f3n excelente es m\u00e1s alta para los estudiantes que provienen de entornos m\u00e1s privilegiados que para los menos favorecidos. Por tanto, es realmente importante darse cuenta de que los oficiales de admisiones contextualizan las puntuaciones cuando se les env\u00edan.<\/p>

Y, de hecho, esta es la raz\u00f3n por la cual la transici\u00f3n a una presentaci\u00f3n opcional o su exclusi\u00f3n causaron que resultara m\u00e1s dif\u00edcil para los estudiantes provenientes de entornos menos privilegiados demostrar a las universidades m\u00e1s rigurosas acad\u00e9micamente que estaban preparados. Vas al Bronxville, y todos esos chicos est\u00e1n teniendo tutor\u00edas, lo que cuesta bastante dinero. Sin embargo, no es as\u00ed en Yonkers. \u00bfNo deteriora esto el sistema?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

M.K.:<\/strong><\/span> S\u00ed, pero los oficiales de admisiones son conscientes de ello y tendr\u00e1n en cuenta cuando un estudiante procede de Yonkers que probablemente no tiene acceso a ese tipo de tutor\u00edas o preparaci\u00f3n, y ciertamente no van a evaluar las puntuaciones de la misma manera. El informe que publicaron en Dartmouth sobre el motivo para volver a requerir los ex\u00e1menes es muy claro al respecto. En este sentido, utilizan el ejemplo de un estudiante de un entorno privilegiado, con una familia de ingresos altos, de un colegio que env\u00eda a muchos estudiantes a universidades selectivas. Un resultado de 1400 de SAT no habr\u00eda ayudado a dicho estudiante para ser admitido en Dartmouth. Mientras que para un estudiante como el que mencionaste de Yonkers, 1400 habr\u00eda sido de mucha utilidad para obtener la admisi\u00f3n.<\/p>

El problema era que, cuando las universidades establecieron que los ex\u00e1menes fueran opcionales, los estudiantes de diferentes or\u00edgenes podr\u00edan tender a no presentar un resultado de 1400, presumiblemente porque los chicos de entornos menos favorecidos no tienen acceso a asesores universitarios expertos que conozcan bien el funcionamiento y que les habr\u00edan aconsejado: esta puntuaci\u00f3n te ser\u00e1 \u00fatil, ya que no te van a comparar con el promedio o la distribuci\u00f3n general.<\/p>

Y en consecuencia, los estudiantes que resultaron m\u00e1s perjudicados al dejar de exigir el resultado de los ex\u00e1menes fueron aquellos de alto rendimiento que proced\u00edan de entornos menos favorecidos. Y, en gran medida, esta es la raz\u00f3n por la que universidades como Dartmouth, Brown, MIT y Yale han anunciado que vuelven a requerir estos ex\u00e1menes.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

M.K.:<\/strong><\/span> Creo que esto es realmente importante. Por ejemplo, el sistema universitario de California todav\u00eda no toma en cuenta los resultados de los ex\u00e1menes, y aquellos que defienden esta postura han se\u00f1alado que esas universidades est\u00e1n matriculando actualmente a m\u00e1s estudiantes de grupos minoritarios provenientes de los entornos menos favorecidos. Sin embargo, el problema radica en que dicho acceso podr\u00eda estar comprometiendo la adecuaci\u00f3n acad\u00e9mica.<\/p>

De este modo, se est\u00e1n admitiendo estudiantes que tienen menos probabilidades de progresar y se est\u00e1 debilitando la correspondencia entre la preparaci\u00f3n acad\u00e9mica del estudiante y el nivel de exigencia acad\u00e9mica de un campus espec\u00edfico.<\/p>

Por lo tanto, es de vital importancia acertar con la universidad. No queremos descartar indicadores de calidad sobre la adecuaci\u00f3n y luego encontrarnos con estudiantes en desventaja al llegar a la universidad. Tu trabajo ha demostrado que muchos estudiantes requieren m\u00faltiples sistemas de apoyo, y deseas asegurarte de que est\u00e9n recibiendo una atenci\u00f3n adecuada en los campus en los que se encuentran. Este es un problema distinto.<\/p>

Y de hecho, hay una cuesti\u00f3n relacionada aqu\u00ed, que es el hecho de que los estudiantes de diferentes or\u00edgenes tienen diferentes niveles de preparaci\u00f3n acad\u00e9mica a los 18 a\u00f1os. No se puede culpar de ello a los puntajes de los ex\u00e1menes estandarizados. Es un reflejo de la desigualdad generalizada y de las brechas de clase en oportunidades, colegios, procedencia familiar y todo tipo de factores que influyen en la probabilidad de que un estudiante de 18 a\u00f1os tenga \u00e9xito en la universidad. Por tanto, desechar los indicadores que nos muestran estas brechas no significa que no existan. Lo digo como alguien que proviene de a\u00f1os en Michigan, que no es una universidad Ivy League. M.K.: <\/strong><\/span>Me complace mucho que hayas planteado este tema. Y me siento orgullosa de ense\u00f1ar en una de estas universidades estatales emblem\u00e1ticas, la Universidad de Maryland. Sin embargo, perm\u00edteme ser clara. Con todo el \u00e9nfasis medi\u00e1tico, e incluso nuestros l\u00edderes p\u00fablicos hablan sobre lo que est\u00e1 sucediendo en las admisiones en estas universidades privadas de \u00e9lite. Las ocho universidades Ivy League combinadas atienden a menos del 1% de los 10,8 millones de estudiantes matriculados en instituciones de cuatro a\u00f1os en este pa\u00eds. Quiero decir, me resulta muy frustrante la cantidad de atenci\u00f3n que damos a estas universidades, considerando que las instituciones emblem\u00e1ticas, como la Universidad de Michigan, la Universidad de Maryland, el sistema SUNY, el sistema CUNY, atienden a muchos m\u00e1s estudiantes que todas las Ivy League juntas. Pero aqu\u00ed hay otra forma de verlo. En los \u00faltimos 30 a\u00f1os, nuestro pa\u00eds ha producido un mill\u00f3n m\u00e1s de graduados universitarios de cuatro a\u00f1os que en 1990. Pasamos de poco m\u00e1s de un mill\u00f3n a poco m\u00e1s de 2 millones. \u00bfSabes cu\u00e1ntos t\u00edtulos otorgaron las Ivy League combinadas? Solo unos 3500 adicionales.<\/p>

M.K.:<\/strong><\/span> Lo que me habr\u00eda gustado ver en el presupuesto es una asignaci\u00f3n considerablemente mayor de fondos destinados a programas dirigidos a la infancia y a los grupos menos favorecidos. De hecho, actualmente estamos destinando m\u00e1s recursos al pago de intereses de la deuda que a todos los programas federales orientados a la ni\u00f1ez. Si aspiramos a preparar a m\u00e1s estudiantes para que puedan prosperar en la educaci\u00f3n superior y a cerrar las brechas socioecon\u00f3micas para fortalecer nuestra fuerza laboral, resulta imperativo redirigir el presupuesto no solo alej\u00e1ndolo del gasto deficitario y los pagos de intereses, sino tambi\u00e9n orient\u00e1ndolo hacia inversiones futuras m\u00e1s enfocadas. Esto implica invertir en la infancia y en la generaci\u00f3n m\u00e1s joven de este pa\u00eds. Melissa Kearney (M.K.):<\/strong><\/span> Yes, is the short answer. The data that comes out of college records has revealed very clearly that students submitting SAT or ACT scores are very highly predictive of their academic performance when they get to college. Much more so than guidance counselor recommendation letters or even their high school grades.<\/p>

In some sense, the fact that the test scores are more predictive of college academic performance than high school grades is not surprising, given how much variation there is across high schools in grading standards and academic rigor. And of course, rampant grade inflation has made grades less meaningful. And so test scores are just very predictive and a really important signal that colleges have access to when they\u2019re looking for the right match, the right academic match between students and their level of academic rigor.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

M.K.:<\/strong><\/span> Yeah, there\u2019s a couple of points to make here. First, researchers who have looked for this find that the test scores are very predictive of academic performance in college for students from different backgrounds. And so that counters the idea that it\u2019s not helpful for students from less advantaged backgrounds or it\u2019s biased against them.<\/p>

The second really important fact here is that college admissions officers don\u2019t consider standardized test scores in a vacuum. They\u2019re very open and transparent about the fact that they evaluate these in the context. The bar for what would be considered an impressive score is higher for students coming from more advantaged backgrounds than less advantaged backgrounds. And so that\u2019s really important to realize that admissions officers are contextualizing the scores when they\u2019re submitted.<\/p>

And by the way, this is why the move to test optional or test blind made it particularly difficult for kids from less advantaged backgrounds to signal to more academically rigorous schools that they were prepared. It\u2019s actually a particularly important signal for kids from less advantaged backgrounds to be able to deliver to university or college admissions officers who might not know their high school very well, for instance.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Interviewer:<\/strong> <\/span>Yeah. So there are various advantages people coming from families that have more wealth have. But one of them is this incredible industry that\u2019s grown up around preparing for the SAT \/ ACT. And I\u2019ll just go from my personal experiences. You know, I\u2019m involved in a charity in Yonkers helping the public school system. You go across the border to Bronxville. Those kids are all getting tutoring, which costs a fair amount of money. Not so much in Yonkers. Doesn\u2019t that screw the system?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

M.K.:<\/strong><\/span> Yeah. But admissions officers are aware of that. So what they would see from a kid coming from Yonkers who likely doesn\u2019t have access to that kind of tutoring or preparation, really, they\u2019re not going to evaluate the scores the same. The report coming out of Dartmouth about why they\u2019re going back to requiring test is very clear on this. So they use the example of a student from an advantaged background, a high income family, a school that sends a lot of kids to selective schools. A 1400 on the SAT would not have helped that student gained admission to Dartmouth. But for a student like your student from that you brought up from Yonkers, 1400 would have been very helpful to them in earning admission.<\/p>

The problem is, when the schools went test optional, kids from different backgrounds were equally likely to withhold a score of 1400, presumably because kids from less advantaged backgrounds don\u2019t have access to the savvy college counselors who are more attuned to how the game is played and would have told them, know this score is helpful for you, you\u2019re not being compared to the overall average or distribution.<\/p>

And so that\u2019s why the kids who were most harmed by the elimination of the test score requirement were really high achieving kids from less advantaged backgrounds. And that\u2019s a big part of the reason that schools like Dartmouth and Brown and MIT and Yale are saying they\u2019re going back to requiring these tests.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Interviewer:<\/strong><\/span> Certainly, getting the right student in the right college is a starting point, but it\u2019s not the ending point. They also have to succeed once they get there. They have to make it all the way through. And the track record of the hybrid was not so great about a lot of children making all the way through, and particularly the ones from less advantaged families. What can we do to make sure they succeed once they get there?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

M.K.:<\/strong><\/span> I think this is really important. So, for instance, the University of California school system is still test blind, and people who are championing that have pointed out that those schools are now enrolling more students from underrepresented minority groups, less advantaged backgrounds. But the problem is, if that access is coming at a cost of less academic match.<\/p>

And so you\u2019re bringing in students who are less likely to thrive and you\u2019re undermining the match between the academic preparations of a student and the academic rigor of a particular campus.<\/p>

So getting the match right is critically important. We don\u2019t want to throw out signals of the match quality and then students who are disadvantaged when they get to college. Your work has shown that a lot of students need a lot of support systems and you want to be able to make sure that students are being well-served by the campuses they\u2019re at. That\u2019s a different problem.<\/p>

And by the way, there\u2019s a related problem here, which is the fact that students from different backgrounds have different levels of academic preparation by the time they\u2019re 18. That\u2019s not the fault of standardized test scores. That is a reflection of rampant inequality and class gaps in opportunities and schools and family background and all sorts of things that affect a student\u2019s likelihood of excelling in college when they\u2019re 18. And so, again, throwing out the metrics that show us these gaps exist don\u2019t mean the gaps don\u2019t exist. They just make it harder for us to identify them and know to where to put our efforts.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

I\u2019m saying somebody who comes from years in Michigan, not an Ivy League school. Maybe I\u2019m a little bit insecure about that, but give us a sense of how big a problem it is in the Ivy League schools as opposed to the State schools like I came from.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

M.K.:<\/strong><\/span> I\u2019m really glad you brought this up. And I\u2019m proud to teach at one of these flagship state universities, the University of Maryland. But so let me be clear. All of the media emphasis and even our public leaders talk about what\u2019s happening in admissions at these private elite schools. The Ivy League, all eight schools combined serve less than 1% of the 10.8 million students enrolled in four year institutions in this country. So whatever these schools are doing in admissions, whether it comes to their testing regime or legacy admissions, is really not that material to the story of higher education in this country.<\/p>

I mean, it\u2019s very frustrating to me how much attention we give these schools, given that the flagship universities, the University of Michigan, University of Maryland, the SUNY system, the CUNY system, they serve so many more students than all of the Ivies put together. But here\u2019s another way to look at this. Over the past 30 years, our country has produced a million more four year college degree holders than in 1990. So we went from just over a million to just over 2 million. Do you know how many degrees were granted by the Ivies combined? An additional 3500.
So when it comes to expanding access to higher education, the story is just not at the elite private schools. And so we need to be talking about what\u2019s happening at the State schools, the public schools, their lack of funding. That\u2019s where the real story is.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

At the same time, what did you see in that budget, if anything, that could help this problem of really making sure we\u2019re supporting kids coming from less fortunate families?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

M.K.:<\/strong><\/span> What I would have liked to see in the budget is a much bigger allocation of funding towards spending on kids, towards spending on less advantaged groups. I mean, we spend more on interest on the debt at this point than we do on all federal programs aimed at children. If we want to equip more students to be in a position to thrive in college, if we want to close class gaps to build up our workforce, we need to be shifting the budget not just away from deficit spending and interest payments, but really to have a more dedicated focus on forward looking investments. And that means in kids and younger generation in this country.
